HYDROGEN AS A FUEL
A good fuel has a high calorific value, should be environmentally safe, should
leave no harmful residue after burning, should be easily accessible & last but
not the least, should be easy to store and transport. Hydrogen acquires all
these qualities & hence, playing a trump card over fossil fuels. Hydrogen can
be used as an excellent fuel in automobile industry too. Many cars from
leading brands like Hyundai Nexo, Toyota Mirai, Honda Clarity, etc. are
still using hydrogen as a fuel.
But hydrogen as a fuel as its own loopholes too. Almost all countries have no
proper hydrogen refueling stations and do not have plans to develop
these too, therefore making its use impractical. Also, it is not so economical
as it is very expensive. Also, safety is a major concern in hydrogen-powered
cars because in case of severe collision, hydrogen, a highly flammable gas,
may leak and explode. Many cars like Hyundai Mirai have tried to limit
these drawbacks as much as possible by incorporating a highly strengthened
fuel tank and many other sensors to detect fuel leakage.
Still, it seems that in far future, hydrogen would be one of the best choices
for fuel. But now, it is the era of fossil fuel cars and electric cars which have
built a great market in the whole world and hydrogen has still a long journey
through to compete these.
